Events
The Electricity Centre hosts a speaker series and topical roundtables, as well as our signature Electricity Camp every spring. The events offer practitioners and the public the opportunity to hear about latest research from university researchers and to discuss pressing electricity topics.
Electricity Camp in the Rockies
A workshop on electricity markets and policy
Electricity Camp brings together leading scholars, practitioners, and policy makers to discuss today’s pressing issues in electricity. Hosted by the Electricity Centre and the University of Calgary, we keep the number of attendees deliberately small to foster dialogue and develop relationships.
For inquiries about attending, please contact Blake Shaffer or Sara Hastings-Simon
Past Events
Capstone Conference: Mathematical Modeling for Renewable Energy and Environment
May 25-29, 2026
Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences
In this conference, we bring together researchers from a broad range of active research areas related to energy transition and climate change where the common element is weather. We aim to highlight varied mathematical models of weather-related phenomena and encourage exchange of ideas among distinct research areas.

5th Annual Electricity Camp in the Rockies
May 20-22, 2026
Banff, AB
Electricity Policy Bootcamp
May 19 & 20, 2026
Banff, AB
This workshop is designed to help bridge the gap between academic research and real-world policy by providing practical insights into how rigorous research can inform decision-making, while also giving participants a clearer sense of how to engage effectively with policymakers and stakeholders.
Demand Flexibility Workshop
April 30, 2026
Calgary, AB
Alberta is exploring how to unlock more flexibility from demand to alleviate strain on a growing grid and provide affordability options for consumers. This small, invite-only workshop is designed for frank, hats-off dialogue among regulators, market participants, and researchers. The goal is simple: learn from jurisdictions that have already enabled demand flexibility — particularly the UK — and make real progress on what it will take to do the same in Alberta. Expect open discussion, not polished talking points. We want to leave with a clearer shared understanding of the barriers, the opportunities, and the concrete next steps to move demand flexibility forward in this province.
4th Annual Electricity Camp

ELS4 - U.S. Fossil Power CCS Under the Inflation Reduction Act (Dr. Emily Grubert)
November 15, 2023
The United States’ 45Q tax credit for carbon oxide sequestration incentivizes emitters to maximize the production and sequestration of carbon oxides, not abatement.
Under the Inflation Reduction Act’s (IRA) 45Q changes, carbon capture and storage (CCS) is expected to be profitable for coal- and natural gas-based electricity generator owners, particularly regulated utilities that earn a guaranteed rate of return on capital expenditures, despite being costlier than zero-carbon resources like wind or solar.
U.S. CCS fossil power sector retrofits could demand $0.4-$3.6 trillion in 45Q tax credits to alter greenhouse gas emissions by -24% ($0.4 trillion) to +82% ($3.6 trillion) versus business-as-usual for affected generators.
Join us with Dr. Emily Grubert (University of Notre Dame) for this webinar where we will discuss these results and their important implications for the design of CCS support in the power sector in Canada.
