Policy
Our Work (In Progress)
We are collaborating with Alberta Health Services (AHS) Policy Services and other policy researchers to examine how healthcare policies can promote equity and reduce mental health- and substance use-related stigma across healthcare systems.
Our current work includes:
📚 A narrative literature review of healthcare policy through an anti-stigma lens, examining how policies can either contribute to or reduce structural stigma within healthcare settings. This work has been completed and is currently being prepared for publication.
🔍 Development of a practical policy assessment tool designed to help organizations evaluate healthcare policies through an anti-stigma lens. The tool aims to identify potential sources of structural stigma and support the creation of more equitable, person-centred approaches to care.
🛠️ Creating practical resources for clinicians and healthcare leaders that translate research evidence into actionable strategies for reducing stigma within everyday practice, organizational processes, and policy development.
Through this work, we aim to support healthcare systems in recognizing and addressing structural barriers, strengthening inclusive policy development, and improving care experiences for people living with mental health and substance use concerns.

A Framework for Assessing Structural Stigma in Health-Care Contexts for People with Mental Health and Substance Use Issues
This framework provides a practical approach to identifying and measuring structural stigma in healthcare systems that affect people with mental health and substance use concerns. It examines factors such as access to care, service quality, resource distribution, provider practices, and patient experiences.
By emphasizing lived experience and system-level assessment, the framework helps healthcare leaders, researchers, and policymakers identify barriers, monitor progress, and support more equitable, inclusive, and person-centred care.
