Ismael Foroughi Team Leader

Dr. Ismael Foroughi, Ph.D, P.Eng.

Team Leader- Principal Investigator

Dr. Ismael Foroughi has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geomatics Engineering at the University of Calgary since January 2026, where he directs the Quantum Physical Geodesy Lab.

He is actively engaged in the international geodesy community as Canada's delegate to the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), chair of its Joint Working Group SC2.2.1 (IAG JWG.2.1) for gravity data integration, and Vice-President of the Canadian Geophysical Union (CGU), having previously served as President of its Geodesy Section. He is a registered Professional Engineer with Associations of Alberta (APEGA) and British Columbia (EGBC) .

Before joining UCalgary, Dr. Foroughi gained experience at Canadian Geodetic Survey of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), where he contributed to the development of GEOID2022, the new geoid model for North America. He earned his Ph.D. in Geomatics Engineering from the University of New Brunswick and remains an Adjunct Professor there and at also York University.

Benedicta is an MSc student interested in physical geodesy and gravity field modelling. Her research integrates terrestrial, airborne, and satellite gravity observations to improve gravity-field determination. Outside the lab, she enjoys writing and exploring new places

Sneha is a Geomatics Engineering graduate with a Minor in Software Engineering, interested in geodesy and space technologies. Her research explores gravity-aided navigation using simulated algorithms to identify improved positioning methods. Outside the lab, she enjoys reading, travelling, and art.

Gabby is an undergraduate Geomatics Engineering student with a minor in Software Engineering, interested in geoid determination and precision. Her research explores geoid height accuracy using gravity anomaly and disturbance data in OSVGeo. Outside the lab, she enjoys hiking and origami.
