Higher dimensional photonic information processing

Higher dimensional photonic information processing

A photon can encode information in more than two distinguishable states. We use its spatial structure to create and control these higher dimensional states, known as qudits, and explore quantum gates, communication protocols and measurement methods. The aim is to establish which advantages survive the practical demands of preparation and control.

Quantum memories and interfaces

Quantum networks need ways to connect travelling photons with systems that can store quantum information. We investigate interfaces between photonic states and solid-state quantum memories, with a particular interest in higher dimensional information. This work supports the development of repeaters that could extend quantum communication beyond the reach of direct transmission.

Secure communication across free space and fibre

We develop and test quantum communication methods using single photons and entanglement, drawing on experience in free-space links, quantum key distribution and entanglement distribution. Our programme includes research towards satellite communication payloads and the optical platforms needed to connect different parts of a quantum network.

Photon sources and integrated quantum photonics

Sources, circuits and detectors determine what a photonic experiment can do. We investigate photon sources and integrated photonic approaches that bring generation, manipulation and measurement into more compact platforms. The goal is to translate laboratory control into reproducible components and protocols for quantum information processing. 

Foundations of quantum mechanics

Foundations of quantum mechanics

We design optical experiments that put fundamental quantum predictions to precise tests, including interference, temporal correlations and the behaviour of entanglement under noise. These questions also generate useful tools: tests of quantum correlations can inform randomness certification, and studies of decoherence can guide the protection and control of quantum states.

Quantum sensing and metrology

We explore how carefully prepared light and quantum measurement methods can reveal information that is difficult to access with conventional approaches. Research directions include quantum imaging, interferometry and state estimation, connecting the control of photons to new ways of measuring physical systems. 

Across these research themes, QuLIT is developing experimental capabilities and research training at the University of Calgary, drawing on complementary expertise at RRI and other collaborating institutions. The CERC program aims to advance original science, establish new photonic quantum research platforms and build lasting research capacity in Canada.
