Learn about the members of the Addictive Behaviours Lab

  1. Dr. David C. Hodgins

    David received his BA (Hons) from Carleton University and completed his MA and PhD in clinical psychology at Queen's University. Currently, he is a professor at the University of Calgary in the Department of Psychology, with an adjunct appointment with the Faculty of Medicine. He also has his own clinical private practice and is an Institute Node Coordinator for the University, through the Alberta Gambling Research Institute (AGRI). David's main interests and works lie in addictive behaviours, with a focus on alcohol and gambling addiction, and comorbid psychiatric disorders. He has a strong interest in self-help and minimal or brief intervention programs for recovering addicts. As well, he finds an interest in the cause and prevention of addiction relapse.

  1. Ashley Ethier

    Ashley is a second year PhD student in the clinical psychology program at the University of Calgary. 

  2. Nolan Gooding

    Nolan Gooding is a fourth-year doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology program at the University of Calgary. He completed both his Bachelor of Science (Honours) and Master of Science in Psychology at the University of Lethbridge. His doctoral research focuses on gambling problem recognition—the extent to which individuals perceive their gambling behaviour as problematic. Specifically, his work seeks to identify factors that contribute to problem recognition and to examine how recognizing gambling-related problems influences behaviour change and help-seeking.


     

  1. Lisa Henkel

    Lisa is a project coordinator currently working on the Cross-National, Motivational Interviewing, SHARP-G, Ctrl-Alt-Play, and Help on demand projects. She received her BSc (Hons.) from the University of Calgary. Lisa's research interests include empirical study design, the convergence of gambling and video gaming, and self-directed treatment for addictive behaviours.

    Lila is Dr. Hodgins' upcoming honours student for the 2026-2027 academic year.

  1. Olivia Seher

    Olivia recently completed her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in psychology at UCalgary. Her honour's thesis, under the supervision of Dr. Andrew Kim, focused on the proliferation of sports betting advertisements in Canada, and an investigation involving who is most vulnerable when exposed to these advertisements. She is currently assisting the Addictive Behaviours Lab with any projects requiring work, as well as working to publish her honour's work in the coming months. Her research interests include sports betting broadly, as well as the convergence mental performance in high level athletes and addiction (e.g., match-fixing, gambling, etc).

  2. Carter Bird

    Carter is a Research Assistant with the Addictive Behaviours Laboratory at the University of Calgary, where he recently completed his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology under the supervision of Dr. Daniel McGrath. His honours thesis examined the consumer protections and responsible gambling features provided by cryptocurrency-based gambling operators, commonly known as Cryptocasinos. He is currently supporting recruitment efforts for the Help on Demand (HoD) study, a project aimed at developing a self-help smartphone application for individuals seeking to manage their gambling behaviours. His broader research interests include gambling superstitions, alternative recovery support, and the intersections of psychology and law. He is currently pursuing admission to law school, with the intention of practicing corporate law.
