Abstract

Current Research

Ongoing research being conducted by Dr. David Hodgins and his staff and students.

The ABL has focused research in:

Gaming – We investigate the structural components of video games that may increase risk of addiction, the perspectives and opinions of gamers regarding "gambling-like" activities within games (e.g., loot boxes), how individuals view gaming addiction, as well as general motives for gaming.

Substance Use – We explore the opinions of those concerned about their substance use, as well as recovery pathways (i.e., what recovery looks like for individuals, how individuals seek out/achieve recovery).

Gambling – We have been researching how to develop easily accessible, and effective tools for individuals to use in their journey to recovery (e.g., conducting pilot testing of a new self-help phone app for those concerned about their gambling behaviour). We also investigate how clinician skills influence client language in the context of motivational interviewing, as well as individual perceptions toward the appropriateness and effectiveness of low risk gambling guidelines.
